Evening came and stretched across south London, as if it too was tired. Liz and Godfrey had gone to a small coffee shop tucked away on Hither Green Lane, where Liz showed Godfrey her lyrics for a new song, a tune inspired by the haunting vocals of jazz and blues artist, like Nina Simone. To Liz’s surprise, Godfrey seemed distant. The lyrics were not of love. He wanted her to write a love song, but she felt she couldn’t because she wasn’t sure if he could love her, and she wasn’t sure of herself to love, even though they grew closer by the day. Her lyrics were inspired by Geraldine, her bravery and her courage. Winnie increasingly wondered about their relationship, but she felt that Liz was big enough to decide things for herself. It was as if they looked into the lives of Sheddy and Geraldine for some kind of light; a vision of what true love might be like. They drank their coffee, he, looking out into the magic of early evening, whilst Liz took out her note pad to re-work her lyrics, using playful doodles to explore an emerging melody. Suddenly became aware of each other’s thoughts. Perhaps the time had come for them to decide what relationship they would have. Would it be simply friends investigating some obscure couple’s life? Unexpectedly Godfrey took the note pad from her hand with a sense of desperation. He read the words, and re-read it. Liz acted as if it was private, as if he had no business to read it. He was annoyed. Like the academic world he craved, her love was elusive to him, and he took it as another failure. He wanted to remind her that Sheddy and Geraldine had been activists, but their journey had been one of romance too. He wanted to hold her and tell her this; he wanted to look into her eyes and for her to look into his, but he seemed not to have the courage that he read about in the letters. They sat there in silence for a while.
‘Why don’t you ever write about love? Why does everything have to be so political?’ He offered her the notepad with almost a disdain.
‘I write about how I feel. D’you have a problem with that!’ They each looked at one another in a way neither had done so before. He took a few coins from his pocket, allowing it to fall like sand from his fingers onto the table. He then walked out and left. Later that night, in the nightclub, she sang her song as an acapella, but the words did not come out as she wanted; the story of her lyrics were not real, and she felt something deep within that was more than a betrayal of her art, it was the betrayal of the musical craft of Billy Holiday, betrayal of the courage of Geraldine and the vision of Ese de Orunmilia.
Talk of traitors frightened Sheriff to the extent that he put his holster on and patrolled the street.
